Terms of Use

Effective October 25, 2026.

Working draft, to be reviewed by a lawyer before publication.

These terms govern your use of Get Phrasal, operated by Scalinata Software inc., a company of Quebec, Canada ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the service, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use Get Phrasal.

1. The service

Get Phrasal is an online service for learning English phrasal verbs ("turn down", "look up to", and so on) through multiple-choice questions. Each quiz asks ten questions, then shows your score. The service has no spaced repetition: senses are drawn at random, and you can set aside the ones you already know. The learning content is in English; the interface is offered in eight languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Swedish).

2. Your account

  • An account is created with a valid e-mail address that is yours, or with a Google sign-in, and with accurate information. You do not create an account with another person's address. This address identifies your account and cannot be changed: to use another one, create a new account.
  • The account is personal: you do not share it and you do not resell it. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for everything done from your account.
  • There is no minimum age. If you have not reached the age of majority where you live (18 in Quebec), you may use Get Phrasal only with the permission of a parent or guardian. That parent or guardian accepts these terms with you and on your behalf, and is responsible for your use of the service, including any purchase. This permission also covers the collection and use of your personal information (see the privacy policy). By creating an account, you state that you have this permission.
  • Individual or organization member. An account is either individual or an organization member account (a school, company or body that provides access); it never changes from one to the other. The rules specific to organization accounts are in section 15.

3. Free trial

The free trial lasts 7 days or until the usage limit shown in the service is reached: it ends as soon as the first of these two limits is reached. It starts when you confirm your e-mail address (or immediately for a Google sign-in).

The trial is offered once per person: to enforce this, we keep a fingerprint of the e-mail address used (the address itself is not kept for this purpose) for 12 months after the account is deleted (see the privacy policy). An address that has already had the trial does not get another. No payment method is requested for the trial, and nothing is ever charged automatically when it ends.

4. Plans and payment

  • Full access to the service is obtained by buying a plan. The available plans, their length and their price are shown on the site before you buy.
  • A plan is paid once. There is no automatic renewal: at the end of the period, access stops and nothing is charged. To continue, you buy a new plan.
  • Prices are shown and paid in euros (EUR). If your payment method (card, PayPal or other) is in another currency, your bank or payment provider performs the conversion at its own rate and may apply bank or payment fees.
  • Displayed prices are before taxes. Applicable taxes depend on your country or region of residence and are added to the plan price. They are calculated and collected by our official reseller, Paddle.com, shown before you pay, and itemized on your receipt.
  • Payment is processed by our official reseller, Paddle.com (Merchant of Record): Paddle is the seller of your plan; it collects the payment, collects and remits the applicable taxes, issues your receipt and handles refunds, and its own buyer terms also apply to the transaction. Scalinata Software inc. provides the Get Phrasal service. The payment methods offered (card, PayPal or others) are those Paddle provides.
  • We may change prices and the plans offered. This affects future purchases only: a plan already paid keeps its length and price.
  • The end date of a plan is calculated in calendar months and rounded in your favor (for example, one month bought on January 31 ends on March 1, not on February 28); a plan adds to the access you have left; the end date is shown with the time, in universal time (UTC).
  • We may extend your access without payment, for example through a free access code or hours offered. Such an extension is a gesture on our part, without obligation: it has no monetary value, is not refundable, cannot be transferred, cannot be converted into money and does not admit any fault on our part. A free access code is valid once per account; it may expire or be deactivated.
  • Organizations. Organization plans (section 15) are sold and invoiced separately, outside online payment.

5. Refunds

You may request a refund within 14 days of buying a plan. A refund is not guaranteed: because purchases are processed by our official reseller, Paddle.com, it is Paddle that reviews the request and decides, under its own refund policy. A request may be refused, in particular in case of abuse or fraud; your use of the service is one of the factors considered. After 14 days, refunds are in principle refused, unless the law requires otherwise. You can make your request through Paddle (paddle.net) or by writing to us; the refund policy explains the steps.

  • a refund, even a partial one, ends the access provided by the refunded purchase. To buy again after a refund, you will have to contact us; for this purpose, we keep your e-mail address, your customer identifier at our reseller and the refund date for 6 years (see the privacy policy);
  • the law that applies to your purchase may give you other rights, which these terms do not limit;
  • if we end your access although you have not breached these terms (see section 10), we refund the unused part of the plan, pro rata.

For any question about a payment, write to us.

6. Permitted use

You use Get Phrasal for your personal use. It is forbidden to:

  • systematically download or copy the content of the service, or redistribute it;
  • extract the content by automated means (bots, scraping);
  • share your account, or get around the free trial or the security measures;
  • disrupt the operation of the service or try to access data that is not yours.

You are responsible for the content you send us (messages sent through the contact form on the scalinatasoftware.com site, account information). You may not send us content that is:

  • unlawful, defamatory, abusive, threatening or harassing;
  • infringing the rights of others (copyright, privacy), or containing another person's personal information without their consent;
  • meant to make you pass for someone else.

This content is not published: only you and our authorized staff can access it. We do not monitor it in advance, but we may refuse or delete a message or content that breaks this section and, where the law requires it, pass it on to the authorities (see the privacy policy).

7. Intellectual property

The service, its code, its graphics and its content (definitions, example sentences, questions) belong to Scalinata Software inc. or its licensors; the rights in any third-party works it reproduces remain with their authors. The answers you give in the service belong to you; we use them only to provide the service to you.

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable right of access, for the length of your trial or your plan. This is not a license to the content itself.

The messages and suggestions you send us are used to reply to you and to improve our services. You allow us to take them into account, without compensation; we publish neither your name nor your message.

8. Accuracy of the content

The content may contain errors (an inaccurate definition, example sentence or explanation, for instance). If you spot one, report it to us: we will correct it as soon as possible. You use the content at your own risk and, to the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for the consequences of an error, except in cases of gross or intentional fault and the mandatory rights granted to consumers, which no clause of these terms can set aside.

An error in the content or in the marking of an answer does not engage our liability beyond the limits of section 9. The service is a learning tool: it does not replace a teacher, or a reference dictionary or grammar, and we do not guarantee any academic or professional result.

9. Availability and liability

  • Get Phrasal is provided "as is". We aim for continuous service, but we cannot promise it will be free of interruptions or errors. Content may be added, changed or removed.
  • To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages (loss of data, time or profits), and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event.
  • Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability in case of gross or intentional fault, nor the rights that the law gives you as a consumer and that you cannot waive.

10. Suspension and end of access

  • You can delete your account at any time from your space: deletion is immediate and final, and cannot be undone. Your access (trial or plan) ends with the account. Except as provided in section 5, ending your account does not entitle you to a refund of the unused part of the plan.
  • End of the trial or plan. When your trial or plan ends, your account stays open but limited: you can sign in, read the help, choose a plan, delete your account, close your sessions and erase your history; you can no longer study, or view your set-aside senses, your settings and your statistics, or change your password. Your history is kept and access returns as soon as you choose a plan.
  • Inactive account. An individual account is deleted 90 days after your last sign-in; if you have a paid plan, these 90 days are counted from the end of the paid period or your last sign-in, whichever is later. An account with a paid plan in progress is never deleted for this reason. We send no e-mail before this deletion: to keep your account, sign in again before the deadline.
  • We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms (section 6 in particular) or that is used fraudulently or abusively.
  • Organization accounts. For an organization account, the end of access and deletion follow section 15.

11. E-mails and personal data

We write to you only for service reasons: confirming your address, resetting your password, notices about your access or plan, security, and changes to these terms. These service e-mails are necessary for the account to work; to stop receiving them, delete your account. They are sent through our e-mail delivery provider, Resend.

We send no promotions and no newsletters.

An account without an e-mail address never receives any. Organization administrators receive a notice when the organization's access is about to end.

The handling of your personal information is described in our privacy policy.

12. Changes to the terms

We may change these terms. For an important change, we notify you at least 30 days in advance by e-mail or by a notice in the service. If you keep using the service after the change takes effect, you accept it; otherwise, you can delete your account. A change does not alter the length or price of a plan already paid. The date at the top of this page shows the version in force.

13. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute falls within the jurisdiction of the competent courts of Quebec. If you are a consumer, this clause does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence, nor of the right to go to the courts of your place of residence where the law guarantees it.

14. Miscellaneous

  • If a provision of these terms is held invalid, the others remain in force.
  • These terms are offered in English and in French. If you use the service in French, the French version is presented to you and applies to you.
  • To reach us: Scalinata Software inc., through our contact form on the scalinatasoftware.com site.

15. Organizations (accounts provided by an organization)

Principle. A school, company or body (the "organization") may buy from Scalinata Software inc., by invoice, a number of seats for a fixed period, with no automatic renewal: access stops on the end date and nothing is charged. Its organization administrator or administrators hand out the seats to organization members (for example the students of a class). Each organization member has their own account and their own history. An organization member's access is provided by the organization: there is no free trial, no individual plan and no personal free access code for this account.

Organization declaration. Before creating accounts or accepting any, an organization administrator accepts, on behalf of the organization, a declaration: the organization has the right to create and manage these accounts; for any minor (under 18, or below the age of majority in their country), it holds the permission of the parent or guardian required by law (in Quebec, Law 25, in particular for children under 14), and Scalinata Software inc. collects no consent in its place; it informs its organization members that the organization sees their progress; it provides only the minimum of information. The organization is responsible for the collection of the personal information it sends us and answers for this declaration.

What the organization sees and can do. The organization administrator sees, for each organization member, the number of senses seen, the number of correct answers and recent activity, never the detail of the answers. They create and remove accounts. For an account without an e-mail address, they can have a new random temporary password generated: they can never read a password or choose one. Each organization member is told, in the service, that their organization sees their progress.

Accounts without e-mail. For students who have no e-mail address, the organization can create accounts without e-mail: a username and a temporary password that the person replaces at their first sign-in, with a nickname or a number as the only data. Such an account receives no e-mail, no notification, no advertising. A forgotten password is replaced by the organization administrator.

E-mail addresses. An organization member with an e-mail address uses an address from a domain declared by their organization. That domain can no longer be used for an individual sign-up. Google sign-in is not offered to organization members.

End of access. At the end of the period, in case of suspension, or when the organization administrator removes an organization member, access is blocked (there is no read-only mode). Ninety (90) days later, the account and its data are deleted. We notify organization administrators 30 days and 7 days before access ends; an organization that extends it before deletion gets its accounts back. A removed organization member cannot join another organization with the same account.

Individual rights. An organization member exercises their rights over their information with the organization administrator, or by writing to us through the contact form on the scalinatasoftware.com site (an account without e-mail goes through its organization administrator). An organization member's account is managed by their organization: there is no self-service deletion for them.
